Mr. Anwar, Why did you withdraw from the Arab League observers' Mission?
I simply withdrew because I found myself serving the Syrian regime, I did not feel that I belonged to an independents observers' team
How?
I gave this regime the time to kill, and I did not have the ability to stop the killing. The regime was committing murder in a dirtier way, it started killing it own loyalists just to persuade the mission of its case and win their sympathy. Thus I concluded that I might turn out to be a member of the 'Shabbiha' gang, so I decided to quit.
What did you see, what are the incidents you witnessed that persuaded you to quit?
Most important are the feelings, I spent fifteen days in Homs, I visited Baba 'Amr, al-Kalidiya, al-Sultaniya and Bab al-Siba'. I visited all those districts and I saw heartbreaking scenes, I saw burned bodies of victims who were tortured, their skin was peeled off. I saw the corpse of children who were murdered. We witnessed people being killed instantly by snipers. I saw all this with my own eyes, I just cannot give up my humanity, I could not pretend to be 'independent' anymore  while I witnessed an atrocity in which no proper human being can bear.
But, Mr. Anwar, What we heard from the head of the mission was different, he claimed that circumstances were not as bad as you describe right now.
I think the head of the Arab League mission wants to hold the stick from the middle, he doesn't want to upset the regime, neither does he want to upset the other parties. He instructed us not to make any statement to the media, to make sure that we would not upset any party involved and give them a reason to obstruct our work. The situation was tragic however, and I think Baba Amr and the other districts I visited in Homs should be declared as "disaster areas", Houses were demolished by heavy bombardment, all the evidence was there, and I saw it with my own eyes.
The report submitted by the observers' team pointed out two points; armored vehicles and heavy weapons were withdrawn from the city, and that weapons were smuggled inside Syria.
I personally did not see any evidence of such claims, we were only told of weapons being smuggled by Syrian officials loyal to the regime, I cannot approve claims that I did not see with my own eyes.
Did you visit any jails?
Yes I visited the jail that belonged to "Political Security", and I saw people in great distress, they were systematically tortured and brought to near starvation, yet we only were allowed to see prisoners in 'moderate' conditions, the worst cases were taken away to military barracks so that we don’t see them. During our visits security personnel infiltrated the detainees so that they don’t speak to us.
How do you know that?
I have had previous experiences, and I can tell, when I see people in jails who look handsome and were ladies perfumes I can tell if they were real prisoners or not.
During your stay in Syria we heard of prisoners being released as signs of good gesture, what would you say about that?
This is a play the regime is good at, When they want to announce the release prisoners security forces launch a massive campaign during which they kidnap people randomly from the streets, put them in jail for a few days until they look in bad shape and then they call us to witness their release. But those whom we ask for their release according to lists that we were given by the opposition were not released. Tanks and armored vehicles were not removed from the city, the only ones that we saw were vehicles surrounded by the Free Army and they let it go, and thus the regime found it in its own interest to withdraw these tanks from their barracks. When I visited this particular barrack I saw a number of dead soldiers , and I could tell they were executed because they were shot from the back, and we knew that they were killed because they wanted to split.
Mr. Anwar, the Arab League admits that this is their first experience in an observation mission in an Arab country, they also acknowledges that the observation team requires training to perform its job professionally, In fact there many developments, such as announcing that the missions' role will be extended, which according to Al-Dabi might take months to perform under such circumstances, what do you think?
I don’t think this is true, the observers were chosen in accordance to their professionalism, they have good reputation in their own countries, and they are well experienced.
What is your a background? Are you a military man?
I have a military, humanitarian, and cultural background; I am also a well known writer. I van confirm to you that the observers do have good experience in their work, but the problem is that we can't work while bullets are being shot around us, and the regime is doing all it can to mislead us by changing the names of roads, bringing secret police dressed in civilian clothes chanting slogans for the Assad regime, hiding arms inside their clothes in order to prevent the opposition to speak to us, shooting at us when we visit 'hot' districts to scare us, spreading rumors that we will be kidnapped if we go to places they don't want us to visit. All these actions were committed by the regime to win time, and to drown us in minor problems that have nothing to do with our work.
We saw members of the observation team on TV channels talking to citizens freely, and they confirmed that they were not harassed.
Those scenes were taken from Baba 'Amr which is under the control of the Free Army, all citizens there are supporting them. Forces of the regime have no access there, and this is why they felt free to talk to us, but in other districts that are controlled by the regime's forces people do not dare to come close to us or talk to us, because we do not have means to protect them and we don’t have any authority to do so.
You actually wrote your account in your facebook during your stay in Syria, why did you take the risk?
Because I got fed up, I witnessed the lies, the slanders and the tragedies and I simply couldn’t hide anymore so I decided to write while I was in the country because I would not consider it proper to wait until I am out, and my account would lose its value, so I decided to speak out and voice my opinion while I was there, and to freeze all my activities with the observation team while I was there. I was harassed due to that, they attempted to assassinate me, only yesterday we were shot at intentionally, they changed the usual rout and took us through a dangerous road during our return journey from Homs to Damascus, and it was clear that they had planned this in advance.
